Programme & transformation leader · Author · Former paramedic
Leadership, transformation, service and writing.
I'm Mark Borrington, a British programme and transformation professional whose career has been shaped by healthcare, organisational change, leadership and public service.
From frontline ambulance work to leading complex transformation, charity governance and community emergency response, the thread running through my work is simple: helping people and organisations navigate change with clarity, humanity and purpose.
About
One career, connected by service.
I'm a programme and transformation leader with experience spanning healthcare, organisational change, operational delivery and the charitable sector. I began my career in the ambulance service, working as an NHS paramedic before moving into leadership, programme delivery and transformation.
Today, I lead complex change in healthcare while continuing to serve my community as Chair of Trustees and Coordinator of Chesterfield Community First Responders. In 2026, I also became a published author with a memoir examining identity, family relationships, self-worth and the long process of learning that being enough is not something another person gets to grant.
My professional and voluntary roles may look varied, but they share the same foundations: calm leadership, practical compassion, honest reflection and a belief that change should make things better for the people who experience it.
The roles have changed over the years. The purpose has not: understand what matters, bring clarity to complexity, and leave people or organisations stronger than I found them.
Professional career
Turning complexity into purposeful change.
I work in programme and transformation leadership, with particular depth of experience in healthcare. My work brings together strategy, governance, people, operations and technology to turn complex objectives into practical, deliverable change.
I'm at my best where the route forward is not yet obvious: establishing direction, creating structure, connecting stakeholders and helping teams make sound decisions in environments where the operational and human consequences matter.
Programme leadership
Creating the governance, priorities, delivery rhythm and decision-making needed to move complex programmes forward.
Transformation & integration
Helping organisations bring together people, processes, systems and cultures while protecting continuity and outcomes.
Healthcare change
Applying operational understanding and a service-led perspective in environments where quality, safety and trust are fundamental.
Leadership through ambiguity
Making complexity understandable, surfacing risk early and giving senior leaders and delivery teams a shared view of what matters next.

Service is not a chapter of the story. It is the thread through it.
My working life began in frontline ambulance care, where I developed a lasting respect for calm judgement, teamwork and the importance of showing up when somebody needs help. During that time, it was a privilege to represent the NHS Ambulance Service at a reception hosted by the then Prime Minister and Mrs Blair at 10 Downing Street, marking the NHS’s 50th anniversary in 1998.
My healthcare experience also extended into teaching. In 2000, I taught the Royal College of Surgeons (Ed.) Pre-Hospital Emergency Care certificate through the charity BASICS. I went on to study counselling and psychology at Sheffield Hallam University in 2006, with a focus on child and adolescent therapy, before joining the NSPCC in 2007 and returning to the NHS in 2012.
Today, that commitment to service continues through my role as Chair of Trustees and Coordinator of Chesterfield Community First Responders, a registered charity whose trained volunteers support East Midlands Ambulance Service across Chesterfield and surrounding communities. Alongside governance and coordination, I remain active as a Community First Responder.
This brings together the two sides of service I value most: direct help in the community and the less visible work of building a resilient, responsible organisation behind it.
CCFRS is a registered charity that supports East Midlands Ambulance Service.

Is It Me or Is It Them? Why I Stopped Chasing the Holy Grail of Being Enough
Published in 2026, my first book is a candid and reflective memoir about identity, family relationships, conditional approval and the exhausting pursuit of being "enough". It traces how patterns formed in childhood can echo through work, relationships and service — and what becomes possible when those patterns are finally recognised.
The book is not a claim to have solved everything. It is an honest account of learning to distinguish responsibility from blame, service from self-erasure, and genuine belonging from a lifetime spent trying to earn it.
